ABOUT US
Welcome to the Helping Hands Community Webpage. I am so happy you have looked us up and I can't wait to help you!
My name is Shawna Nelson and I am the founder of SD Ghosts and Helping Hands. My story begins back in 2017 when my son and I experienced a bad visit at a certain location (shall not be mentioned) and on our way home, I saw the disappointment in my son's eyes (at the time he was 15) and I knew I had to do something. No one should ever go through what we did and no one should have to see the hurt in their child's eyes. As we got home and sat in our driveway, I looked over at my son and said: "There has to be a change and a better place to go." He shook his sad head and it was there, I came up with my own idea and that was to help others in need.
Now, let us fast forward to December of 2019 and after hearing so many horror stories, people talking about how they were treated, I turned my private group into something more public. I had announced my then, 35+ member group to many Facebook posts and little did I know, the support that came pouring in. I am a strong-willed individual with a strong and caring heart, but the donations that keep coming, the community backing me up and an amazing team, it has truly warmed my heart to the point I almost break down into tears; happy tears of course.
It was just before Christmas and a member came to me, telling me of a little boy who had no Christmas and I wasn't going to have that, not now, not ever! So, my son and I went through all the toys that were donated, put together a gift bag that had toys and a blanket in it and sent it off. The community of Hot Springs pulled together and gave the boy and his mom the best Christmas they could have had; toys & a full Christmas dinner. This is why our community is great!! <3
Helping Hands is a non-profit group that sits on a private dwelling and is 100% dedicated to helping others. No matter the need. We will never ask you for donations, but if you wish to, then all the proceeds go back into the group to help buy supplies needed to restock or to purchase Gift Cards from stores in town. This allows the person in need to go buy food, hygiene items and so forth. We will also never ask you why you are here, your backstory or anything like that and never will we turn anyone away!
We have all needed some help at one point or another and didn't know where to turn. Please know that we are not replacing the local Community Action, Food Bank or Churches, but more of another alternative place to go to get items.
All of our donations are from the supporting community right here in the beautiful Black Hills of Hot Springs South Dakota and without them, none of this would be possible so Thank You!
Donations
Helping Hands Donations are FREE of charge and that means you do not have to pay to browse on hand items, nor do you have to pay to drop items off. Our mission is to see everyone get the help they need and should never have to pay for such.
Our donations come from the community and are sorted through to ensure they are up to fair standards on handing out and what I mean by fair standings is this. If there are small stains on clothing but still wearable, it is considered fair and either folded to put onto a shelf or hung up in their size. All items are sized and put into their proper place.
This also means each item is given a good, thorough look over and if the item does not meet the Fair Standards we have in place, it either gets torn up to make dog toys or cut up for rags to use. NOTHING goes to waste here. If a toy needs to be fixed, clothing needs to be stitched up, we fix it!
Items we accept
Gift Cards, Monetary Donations (both aren't mandatory), Perishable Items, Clothing, Household Items, Furniture, Baby Items, Personal Hygiene, Homemade Items, Winter Wear, Hunting Wear, Hangers, Bedding, Picture Frames, Pillows, Baskets, Decorations, etc. We really don't turn anything away and if we get an oversupply of an item, it stays boxed until a free space becomes available.
Items we don't accept
Guns, trash (used papers, opened items of food, etc.)
